Often called the “Niagara of the Philippines,” the massive Tinuy-an Falls in Bislig, Surigao del Sur is one of the country’s largest and widest waterfalls at 95 meters in width and 55 meters in height. Ride a bamboo raft if you want to get a closer look at the powerful water curtain. You can also climb the waterfall via an access trail beside it so you can reach the third tier, which looks like a big stairway. Tinuy-an Falls just leaves you in awe of how wonderful Mother Nature is.

Have you ever wondered where enkantos (fairies) live? Well, you can take a peek at the gateway to their secret realm at the Enchanted River in the town of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur. The 150-meter deep sinkhole at the bottom of the lagoon causes the cold water to have a dark blue shade, contrasting the aquamarine hue of the surrounding area. At the bottom of the sinkhole is a small cave that leads to vast underwater cathedrals; the extent of the cavern system below the Enchanted River has not been fully explored yet. Tip #1: To make your trip time-efficient, start at Butuan City, Agusan del Sur. Head south to Bislig where you can spend the night. In the morning, head to Tinuy-an Falls and Enchanted River.

Travel northward to Cagwait Beach then head south to San Agustin. Spend the night in San Agustin so you could visit the Britania Group of Islands in the morning. After your island hopping trip, continue northward to Surigao del Norte, visiting Lanuza and Cantilan along the way.

Tip #2: There are many buses all along the national highway, so you won’t have a hard time hopping from one destination to another. Also, there are bus terminals in all the key towns. Once you get off the terminal, ask a habal-habal driver to take you to these destinations.

Tip #3: Getting to these destinations from the national highway involves riding a habal-habal, or a motorcycle for hire. The ride is an adventure in itself! Since habal-habals are not regulated, negotiate the fare with the habal-habal driver.

Tip #4: Accommodations and food establishments in the Caraga region are very affordable. In fact, PHP 300 a meal is already more than enough!
