8 Defunct KFC Menu Items We Miss More Than Our Ex

Of all the fast-food chains in the Philippines, KFC is the master heartbreaker. The world famous chicken shop has made a habit of giving us dishes so pure and wonderful and then taking them away the moment we fall completely in love. With the constantly evolving KFC menu, loyal diners are often introduced to some truly inspired creations. But like the most unforgettable lovers, a lot of the dishes are never meant to stay.

Here are the defunct KFC menu items we still can’t get over:

1Double Down

Sometime in 2010, KFC looked at a normal chicken sandwich and thought it’d be a good idea to replace the buns with two fried chicken fillets. The resulting dish is the notoriously unhealthy but undeniably satisfying Double Down. KFC even updated the dish to a Zinger version before discontinuing it altogether. Since then, KFC has been cruelly teasing us with limited runs of Double Down variations, but sadly there are no signs of this being a permanent fixture on the KFC menu. *sniff*

2Hot and Cheesy Chicken

Just when we thought KFC’s Hot and Crispy chicken couldn’t get better, they decided to slather it in an irreverent cheese sauce. By that point, we were smitten. The dish was so good, we almost forgave KFC for taking away the Double Down. Never mind that KFC said the sauce was made of “Romano cheese” even though it tasted more like our beloved Chiz Whiz. The phase out of this dish hurt us more than Hodor’s death on GOT, TBH.

3Crispy Butter Chicken

When this dish came out, the smell of butter would linger in every KFC branch—which perhaps made it even more irresistible. The fake butter-flavored powder coating KFC’s original recipe chicken was only a halfway-decent approximation of actual butter. Still, there was something satisfying about the dish nonetheless. We wouldn’t mind seeing this dish make a buttery comeback.

4Chili Lime Chicken

This dish was the fried chicken we never knew we needed but apparently always did. It gave us life with its perfect blend of zestiness and spice. We love our KFC gravy, but this was perhaps the one dish that did better without it. KFC broke our hearts yet again when they took this away from us.

5Crispy Cheese Chicken

To the maniac who thought of breading KFC chicken in crushed Clover chips: may the heavens bless your brilliant soul. Equal parts insane, indulgent, and ingenious, this dish made all Pinoys swoon when it first came out in 2014. Crispy Cheese Chicken has been off the menu for a while now, but Clover Chips and KFC Chicken will always be our OTP.

6BBQ Rods

KFC doesn’t exactly do a lot of Filipino flavors, but they amped up the Pinoy-ness with this dish. The BBQ rods were two sticks of KFC fun shots doused in barbecue sauce and served with java rice. If only for its very Pinoy spirit, we’re hoping to see this again on the KFC menu.

7Cheezy Bacon Fest

Remember the golden era when KFC just covered everything in cheese and bacon? Yup. Our cholesterol and sodium levels are definitely thankful that that era’s over, but our hearts and bellies are crying buckets.

8Spicy Gangnam Chicken

KFC was on-trend when they introduced this dish at the height of the K-pop boom. It didn’t take long for the sweet-savory glaze to win us over and capture our hearts. KFC’s new menu items (like the Osaka Teriyaki Rice Bowl) have a similar flavor, but of course, it’s not the same.

As these discontinued dishes prove, #walangforever, especially on the KFC menu. That being said, at least we can indulge our heartbreaks in their next crazy creation.
