This Local Project Shows How Art Can Help A Community

You might have noticed a lot more beautified walls in the metro in the past few months. We have the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) to thank for that!

The NCCA’s Arts in Public Spaces project’s main purpose is to create mural paintings in public spaces to help popularize our local culture and art scene.

In 2014, the NCCA did this project in partnership with the MMDA and various visual arts organizations. The underside of Mabini Bridge in Manila was beautified as a result of these efforts!

Another installment of this project was done in Pasay, in partnershp with the Philippine Air Force and the Pasay City Government. Spaces in Villamor Air Base and Pasay City Cemetery were painted with gorgeous mural paintings highlighting Pasay as the Travel City. Check out these photos!

Art is something that Manila is starting to appreciate, with local organizations like these making an effort to beautify the city, one small space at a time. Check out this video of Pasay City being transformed by artists–with the help of some residents!

It’s amazing how a little paint and a lot of imagination can have an impact on a community! Some people might think art is getting lost in an increasingly modern and urbanized world. However these pockets of color help add joy to everyday life and is certainly better than tired, graffiti-splattered walls.

Seeing kids wield paintbrushes to add cheer to their home is heartwarming. Of course, the volunteer artists have to be lauded too! The mural paintings they came up with are incredibly inspiring and a great example Filipino talent used for good.
