Do you fantasize about swimming in a sea full of different kinds of pizza? Here are some reasons why we need to keep coming back to Papa John’s Pizza.
My love affair with Papa John’s began back in college when they still had a branch in University Mall (or popularly known as U.M.) along Taft Avenue. Whenever I had that special craving for pizza, I would always drop by this pizza place with my barkada or my dorm mates to feed that pizza monster inside me.
Your All-American Pizza Parlor
This pizza parlor welcomes you with its signature red brick walls and cozy interiors. Walking into Papa John’s Megamall branch, you notice that it is rather compact. However, you’ll feel that it was designed this way to bring closeness among family members or an intimate group of friends. After all, eating out with a certain group of people on a regular Friday night is probably one of life’s simplest pleasures, right?
At the far end, you will find their open kitchen behind a glass window wherein you can watch how they prepare your orders. Did they divulge any recipes? Yes! As a matter of fact, the only secret recipe behind all of these yummy dishes is that they all use the freshest ingredients instead of canned ones, and all are prepared from scratch.
Papa John’s Appetizers
My Friday dinner started off with Ultimate Potato Wedges (PHP 145). I must say that these tasty carbs that were drizzled with cheese and mayo sauce were delicious. What a way to start the evening!
A little on the extreme side is the Pepperoncini Dynamite (PHP 95) which really kicked it up a notch! I was taken aback by the sour and spicy (my favorite!) combination. These peppers were wrapped with a slice of tasty bacon and sprinkled with Parmesan cheese. A bite into one will heighten the spicy level for a while and die out quickly (spare the iced tea, please!). If you have children of your own, you’ll probably have to warn them first unless they’re into spicy food.
Papa John’s Favorites
One of the best combinations in life when it comes to eating is to have pasta and pizza side by side. Their take on Creamy Crab Meat (PHP 99/à la carte, PHP 297/shareable platter) was a glorifying experience. The pasta just swam in its creaminess, and there was more than enough crab meat to go around. It was a tad spicy so just a warning to others (especially with kids) who will order a plate.
This beautiful and simple classic is none other than the Cheesy Mushroom (PHP 99/à la carte, PHP 297/shareable platter). I noticed that I didn’t get umay after having a few forkfuls. I love the simplicity of the dish just by having mushrooms and lots of cheese. It would be something that I would definitely order when I go back to Papa John’s.
An interesting spin to a classic alfredo dish is the Spinach Alfredo (PHP 99/à la carte, PHP 297/shareable platter). It has a mild taste to it, and nothing about it was overdone.
The Star Pizzas
Now, we come to the main stars of the show! With Chicken Bacon Ranch (PHP 295/9” Regular, PHP 430/12” Family, PHP 520/14” Party), I absolutely love how an ordinary salad dressing such as ranch can serve as the finishing touch to a pizza. Bits of grilled chicken, crispy bacon, fresh garlic, tomatoes, and onions were prevalent on every inch of space, and this had me going gaga after every bite.
Papa John’s specialty pizza includes the Super Papa (PHP 350/9” Regular, PHP 485/12” Family, PHP 595/14” Party) which was laced with flavors coming from crunchy onions, green peppers, and black olives. Your meats come from pieces of ham, pepperoni, and Italian sausage. The crust was baked to perfection as it was soft and chewy with every bite.
Award-winning Pepperoni (PHP 350/9” Regular, PHP 485/12” Family, PHP 595/14” Party) took the honor of ranking first in the Manila Pizza Delivery Test according to Looloo. This is no surprise knowing that every slice has overflowing and enormous pepperoni slices, and clingy cheese that doesn’t seem to want to let go. This is one of the telltale signs that Papa John’s is never stingy with its ingredients.
What To Watch Out For
Fresh from the oven, I sampled the latest appetizer from Papa John’s, called the Vegetable Stromboli. It was comforting to find something different from the usual and even kids will fight over this one for seconds. There were bits of spinach here and there bathing in cheesy goodness. Its soft dough made me think that it was simply homemade because of its freshness.
Aside from their classic selection of pizzas and pasta, I was able to try their Fried Chicken Goodness (PHP 390/3 pieces, PHP 559/5 pieces, PHP 670/7 pieces), which is only available in their Jupiter branch. Oh my, it had me eating with my hands and all. My favorite part has always been the skin, and surprisingly, this one had all the right herbs and spices going on.
It wasn’t too salty like most fast food restaurants, thanks to the fresh ingredients used when preparing this mouthwatering staple. When it came to the white meat, it was indeed succulent, and I couldn’t have enough. There is no other way to eat fried chicken than to dip it in a sea of gravy.
When it came to dessert, the toasty Pineapple Caramel Stromboli was absolutely heavenly, especially if you have a sweet tooth (like me). The first bite will surprise you because of the delightful squirt coming from the fruit juices as it mixes with the drizzled caramel, sprinkled cinnamon, and soft chewy dough. It is somewhat reminiscent of a bite-size version of an Austrian strudel. As of the moment, you won’t be able to find them on the menu because these new products (along with its prices) will be launched later this year.
With Papa John’s, you can always rely on the fact that they use the freshest ingredients around, whether it be a dine-in experience or a last-minute delivery!
