As a first-time visitor to the country, one of the first things you need to consider is getting your visa. Visa requirements in the Philippines are quite straightforward, but will also depend on your country of origin.

No visa is required if you are a citizen of an Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member country. Visas are also exempted for passport holders from 157 countries. Approved stays last for 14 days, 30 days, or 59 days.

There are several kinds of visas available to other visitors of the Philippines. The most common kind of this is the non-immigrant visa, which is used by temporary tourists who visit the country for business, vacation, education, or employment.
Out of all the non-immigrant visas available, the most commonly applied type is the Tourist Visa, also called 9(A). This allows entry to the Philippines for 14, 30, or 59 days, depending on your nationality. Generally, the following visa requirements in the Philippines are needed in order to process a tourist visa.
- Passport/travel document valid for at least six (6) months beyond the intended period of stay in the Philippines;
- Duly accomplished visa application forms;
- Passport Photos (2 pieces);
- Proof of bona fide status as tourist or businessman;
- Confirmed tickets for return or onward journey to the next port of destination; and
- Payment of visa fees
If you are traveling to the Philippines under the invitation of a company that has hired you, there will be certain requirements needed in order to process the appropriate visa. While your company will be able to do this on your behalf, it is best to be familiar with the process.
A valid contract with the duration of employment is first required, after which an Alien Employment Permit (AEP) will be secured on your behalf from the Department of Labor and Employment. This usually takes fifteen working days. After getting a valid AEP, the company will be able to apply for a change from tourist visa 9(A) to work visa 9(G) at the Bureau of Immigration. It can last anywhere from a year to three years, depending on your length of contract. Remember that any foreigner must first apply for a tourist visa before changing it to an employment visa. This is also renewable, subject to certain restrictions.
Extension of Stay and Immigrant Visas
In case you are on a tourist visa and want to stay longer in the country, it is very important to remember to extend your visa. A few days before this is due to expire, proceed to the Bureau of Immigration and fill out an application for extension. Certain fees will apply.
Immigrant visas are also available to those who want to reside in the Philippines for a much more extended period.
